Gospel Hill Church of Christ

Serving God and Serving Others

The church of our Lord is the greatest institution upon the face of the earth.  It had the greatest architect, God (Eph. 3:10-11); the greatest Builder, Christ (Matt. 16:18) and the greatest price paid for it, the blood of our Savior (Acts 20:28).  Our Lord loved the church enough to leave His glorious position in heaven in order to create it (Phil. 2:5-7).  It was His love for His Father and for the souls of all humanity that led Him to build this great church.  We are especially grateful to Him and truly humbled to be a part of it.

What to Expect When You Visit Us

We want you to visit us at the Gospel Hill Church of Christ, but we also want you to feel comfortable.  Visiting a new place for the first time can be intimidating so let us tell you what you can expect when you honor us with a visit. Using the pattern of the churches in the Bible, we worship God “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24), which means with the right attitude and by doing the proper things. We assemble regularly (Hebrew 10:25) to worship on every first day of the week and on Wednesday evenings in order to study the Bible (2 Tim. 2:15).

Various men from the congregation will lead us in prayer.  Members reverently pray unto God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ the Son (John 16:23). Sometimes there may be prayers for specific needs and requests.  Typically we pray several times during each church service.

If you visit us on a Sunday, the Lord’s Supper will be included in the services.  Christians observe this memorial every “first day of the week.” Again, the reason for this is our desire to follow New Testament teaching. During this memorial, plates containing pieces of unleavened bread will be passed throughout the entire congregation.  The bread symbolizes the body of Christ. Each Christian that participates will break off a piece of bread and eat it. Next, trays filled with small cups containing “fruit of the vine” (grape juice) will be distributed.  This symbolizes the blood of Jesus. Each one will drink the contents of the cup. If you choose not to participate, don’t be embarrassed.  Feel free to just pass the plate or tray to the person sitting next to you.

Also, if you visit on a Sunday, containers will be passed to collect the weekly financial offering. Members give toward the work of the local church (1 Corinthians 16:1,2), not as a tithe, but as they have prospered (2 Corinthians 9:7). As our guest, you will not be pressured and are not expected to make a donation.  Feel perfectly comfortable to contribute or just pass the collection plate on down the row. The money that is collected is used to spread the gospel as well as helping needy saints.

One of the unique things about churches of Christ is that the music is “a cappella.”  That means we sing without the accompaniment of musical instruments.  This is not just a preference, it is a conviction.  We are seeking to worship according to the New Testament pattern (Eph. 5:19).  There are no choirs, solos, or “special music”  but everyone is invited to participate in this act of worship.  We sing meaningful and heartfelt spiritual songs in order to worship God and encourage each other in the faith (Col. 3:16).

We support a full-time preacher to prepare and present Bible lessons and sermons.   A message from God’s Word is preached upon the first day of each week (Acts 20:7).  The whole counsel of God is preached without fear or favor of any man (Acts 20:26-27). At the close of the sermon, the speaker will “extend an invitation.”  This is simply a convenient time to invite those who may need to respond to do so. We will encourage those who wish to “respond” to come to the front of the auditorium while the congregation stands and sings a hymn. Please do not feel uncomfortable during this invitation.  You will not be singled out in any way.  There may be some who respond, or none.
